The Southern College of Engineering was founded in the year 1954 by late Mr. S.P.Luiz, F. I. C.E, Ex. MLA. This Institution is approved and recognized by the Director General of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India vide DGCA letter 5 - 20- 11/A1(2). Today this unique college of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering is the only one of its kind in Kerala. This college is imparting Ab- initio training in the field of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering to cover the basic Licence for Airframe and Aero engines.

Today in India and Abroad there is acute shortage of Aviation Technician and Engineers. Importance of training in the field of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering is, inorder to see as many of its young people take to the air and encourage the Aviation industry to keep the Aircraft in flight by giving to the students actual experience by class room instruction, shop practice and job training. This provides an opportunity for the students to learn first hand the construction, operation, overhaul, prepare, system functional test, replacement, modification and maintenance of airframe and powerplant and related equipments. This would enable the student to obtain an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer position in Government of India, State government, Union Territories, Public sector, Private sector Airways or a similar position in worldwide.
